All New Jersey Nursing Homes to be Sprinkler Protected
The NJ, USA Department of Community Afairs has announced that from 2 January 2007 all nursing homes will have to be protected by automatic sprinkler systems. Existing premises have three years to undertake the work.

"Sprinklers are vital to fire protection and play a major role in reducing the chance of fire fatalities," said Commissioner for Community Affairs Susan Bass Levin. "This requirement is a major step forward in insuring the safety of the state's seniors as well those who work in nursing homes."

Fires started at asylum complex

Disturbances broke out overnight in all four wings of the UK's largest immigration detention centre and a number of fires were started.

The Metropolitan Police said they were called at about 0040 GMT and officers were providing assistance at the scene, near Heathrow airport. Fire crews are also on standby.

A Home Office spokesman said specialist prison officers were drafted in when several fires were lit in the early hours, setting off the sprinkler system.

Fire Kills Ten in Unsprinklered US Care Home
The United States news media reports that a fire in the Anderson Guest House, a home for the elderly or mentally ill, has killed ten people and injured all the other 24 people in the building when the fire started.

Fire Destroys Underground Car Park
The French fire service reports that on 11 November fire broke out at 02:00 in a car park beneath an apartment building in Alfortville, south east of Paris. The fire totally destroyed a dozen cars. The ceiling then collapsed, damaging more cars.

Sprinklers Save Firebombed DIY Superstore, Belfast
The BBC Northern Ireland carried this story on 15 October:
 
 "Police appealed for keyholders to check premises. Police have warned traders in Newtownabbey to be extra vigilant after a fire bomb attack on a B&Q store in the area.    The store on Mill Road sustained smoke and water damage after a fire broke out near wood in the DIY section. The sprinkler system kept the fire under control until firefighters arrived at about 2340 BST on Saturday.
