Fire Kills Ten in Unsprinklered US Care Home PDF Print E-mail
The United States news media reports that a fire in the Anderson Guest House, a home for the elderly or mentally ill, has killed ten people and injured all the other 24 people in the building when the fire started.

The fire broke out at about 01:00 on Monday 27 November. Matt Blunt, the Governor of Missouri visited the scene and stated that arson had not been ruled out. State Fire Marshal Randy Cole said the facility was last inspected in March. It had smoke detectors but no sprinkler system, since this was not required by the State.

It may come as a surprise to European readers to learn that sprinklers are not required in all care homes in the United States. Although they must be fitted in new care homes there remain many jurisdictions which have not required older care homes to retrofit sprinklers.
