| Tunnel Fire Killed Nine |
|
International media report that fire has killed nine people in the 750m long Viamala tunnel in canton Graubünden, Switzerland. The fire started on Saturday, 16 September when a car crashed into a bus, setting both vehicles on fire. Another car hit the crashed vehicles and also caught fire. Several people had to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Safety measures in the tunnel have been upgraded in recent years but the tunnel still does not have any emergency exits and has traffic flowing in both directions. In bi-directional tunnels it is difficult to establish effective ventilation to remove smoke. One way to reduce the quantity of smoke produced is to fit a fire suppression system.
