New Portuguese Fire Safety Code Published
On 29th December the new Portuguese fire safety building code was published. It will take effect on 1st January 2009. The code complements another document published on 12th November, which categorises buildings by type and risk. Together the documents define what fire safety measures are required in new buildings. Sprinklers are required in large car parks; in most buildings higher than 28m; in public assembly buildings, shopping centres and transportation centres; and in hotels. Several threshold criteria can lead to a requirement to fire sprinklers. For example, sprinklers are required in new hotels if they are higher than 9m, hold more than 100 people who are awake or more than 50 people who are asleep.

The full documents in Portuguese and a summary in English are on www.eurosprinkler.org under "Law" .
